European Day of Parks – 24 May 2025

Posted 24th May 2025

May 24th marks the European Day of Parks (EDoP), a day to celebrate and raise awareness about protected areas across Europe. It was launched in 1999 by the EUROPARC Federation and commemorates the establishment of the first national parks in Sweden in 1909. The event aims to highlight the importance of these protected areas for nature policies, conservation, and sustainable management.

From small and medium-sized urban spaces to large areas comprised of lakes, mountains, and woodland, parks are a great example of the ecosystem services they provide to all live including human societies. Especially in urban settings, parks are oases where flora and fauna can thrive and provide humans with a space for recuperation, mental well-being, and a shield from sensory overwhelm such as excessive exposure to noise and visuals/lighting.

In Europe, parks are widely proliferated and defined as “…living, thriving systems where everything is connected” by the EUROPARC organisation. There are many urban areas in other parts of the world, however, that are lacking these vital spaces. Establishing regional equivalents of organisations that promote and educate the public on the importance of increasing nature spaces in cities would be greatly beneficial to both natural flora and fauna, and people residing in city spaces.
